Keli Lane’s Early Life
In terms of relevance to this case, nothing important happened in Keli Lane’s life until November of 1992. It was at this point that, in her last year of high school, Lane had her first abortion. The baby was fathered by her high school sweetheart. In 1994, she had another abortion, but in this case, the father of the baby is unclear. Later that same year, Lane fell pregnant again to a man with whom she had a four-month long relationship. It is around this time that she starts dating rugby player Duncan Gillies.
In early 1995, Lane gave birth to a baby girl at the King George Hospital in Camperdown just a few hours after playing the grand final of a suburban water polo competition. She is just 19 years old. Her daughter is legally adopted, but on the forms, Lane incorrectly lists Gillies as the father. He has no idea.
Lane is pregnant again in 1996, and at the prestigious school where she works, the changes in her body are noticed. For some reason, Lane exists under the impression that nobody is aware she is pregnant. She presents several times to hospitals in the first weeks of September, before eventually giving birth to Tegan Lane on the 12th of September 1996.
This is when things start to get a bit blurry. Lane definitely leaves the hospital on the 14th of September, but nobody can figure out exactly when. There’s some indication that she may have left with Tegan through a fire door. In any case, she arrives at her parent’s house at 3pm without Tegan, and later attends a 4pm wedding without the baby as well.
She is never seen again.
Gillies and Lane breakup in 1998, and the same year, Lane falls pregnant again to another man during a short relationship. Initially, she tries to have an abortion, but the pregnancy is 25 weeks along, and doctors will not perform it. So, Lane gave birth to another child, now her third, and contacts Anglicare adoption, naming Gillies as the father. When Anglicare follow up with him about the adoption, Keli Lane’s story falls apart.
