Someone Makes A Bong On Play School, Sends Reputation Up In Smoke

Children’s television show Play School is on everyone’s lips today, but not for the reason you would hope.

Instead of being praised for teaching children the wonders of soft toys as friends and reading aloud, host Alex Papps appears to be teaching kids how to construct their own bong.

The oddly familiar creation was a part of a show that aired several months ago. But sharp eyed (or is that red eyed) parents, likely wondering why their four-year-olds were developing a serious case of the munchies, have been sharing the giggly DIY on social media. Now spreading, there are a number of people online wondering just what Papps was making in his alternative arts and crafts moment.

In the clip, Papps is seen putting a hole in a plastic bottle and then inserting a straw inside before plugging the air with BluTack, supposedly to ensure no water escapes. To some of you out there, these instructions might be very familiar. If you, like us, have absolutely no idea about bongs (cough) it’s exactly the same technique that an army of poor Australian stoners have been using to get their jollies on for a generation. Apparently almost any bottle can be used to make a bong in almost exactly the same fashion. Or at least, that’s what all us innocents at SAHM have heard from our bad influencers.

Now, children’s television often has a little ‘in-jokes’ to make it more interested for the parents watching at home. In one Play School episode we fondly remember, as one host was pretending to be a house she was summarily complemented by the other host on her “lovely rear entrance”. You can’t make this stuff up. But in the case we can’t be the only ones left wondering if they’re really targeting the unemployed stoners who’re at home and unable to drag themselves off the couch to change the channel.

In all honesty though, we have scoured the web, and still have no idea what the contraption was actually supposed to be used for. Likely it’s really just a totally innocent craft project, intended like most Play School projects to make a mess and ignite a love of DIY that will take several years of Pinterest fails to extinguish.

For now though, all we can do is have a breathy giggle, take a few deep breaths, make some baked goods for our munchie-loving toddlers, and wonder what Play School was really thinking. They might be a cast of innocents, but the Australian people certainly aren’t!

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on a children’s television show?
