This single mum’s twist on “Dads and Doughnuts Day” at her son’s school is so heartwarming, it has now gone viral.
When Whitney Kittrell became a single mum three years ago, she made sure that she would do anything she could to give her two kids a life similar to other kids who have both a mum and a dad.
But when she was presented with a “dads and doughnuts” day at her son’s kindergarten, her heart sank.
“We have accomplished a lot. Trips alone, teaching my son how to play catch, killing bugs with minimal screaming, countless memories, and a normal life. But when my kindergartener came home with a paper saying that they were having “dads and doughnuts” my heart kinda sank,” she posted to Love What Matters Facebook page.
However, that didn’t dampen her spirits and thought her son might want to take his grandpa, but her son’s answer surprised her.
“He just smiled and said ‘no. I want you to go. You’re my mom and dad.”‘
Hearing those words from her son, she willingly painted on facial hair for him.
“This morning I gathered up my best dad outfit, painted on some facial hair, and went to breakfast with my sweet son. I was so embarrassed but I couldn’t help but smile when he introduced me to his little friends saying ‘this is my mom”¦ she’s my dad too so I brought her!”‘ she wrote.
Despite doing everything for her kids, sometimes, she wonders if she’s doing enough for them. “I’ve tried my best to let them know they are loved but I wonder a lot if I’m actually succeeding at it,” she wrote.
As she was about to leave, her son left her the sweetest words.
“When I went to leave he ran after me and hugged me tight around my neck and whispered ‘mom”¦ I know that you’ll always be there and do anything for me. Thank you. I love you.’ He kissed my cheek and ran off. I hope he remembers this day cause I’ll never forget it or his sweet words,” she wrote.
The post has been shared more than 2500 times, and was liked by over 22,000 with many words of support from other single parents. “As one single mom to another”¦ who knows how hard the struggle often is”¦ thank you for this amazing share and the tears in my eyes. You’re obviously raising a fine young man there, “one mum wrote.
However, others hit back at the school over the event and disagreed with Whitney dressing up like a man. “This is great but you shouldn’t have to make yourself look like a boy to acknowledge your paternal role in your child’s life. Yes there’s stereotypical dad things that dad’s do but that doesn’t mean moms can’t do them.”
One dad also commented how things turned out when he dressed up in a skirt for mum’s day. “Yet when I dress up in a skirt and go to mommy and milk day I’m classified as a “freaking weirdo” and arrested. jk good for you mom! Keep doing whatever it takes to make your children happy! You are doing an awesome job!!” he said.
