A pilot has been praised after he bottle-fed the baby of a mother-of-four struggling with her kids as they boarded a Finnair flight.
Finnair captain Tom Nystrom was already off-duty when he noticed the mother who was having a difficult time holding her two youngest sons.
Wearing his uniform, Mr Nystrom, who is a father himself, offered his help and took one of the boys in his lap and held him until he became restless. He then gave the baby back to his mother and took the other infant instead, while the mother looked after her other son.
Ami Niemela, a senior member of cabin crew, didn’t hesitate to take a photo of that heartwarming moment, which showed Mr Nystrom, smiling at the camera with a baby in one hand and a bottle in the other.
Ms Niemela shared it on Instagram, and wrote:
“Today we had a mother on board travelling with four little boys. Two of the boys were just babies.
“Naturally one cannot travel with two babies on one’s lap, so we had to solve the dilemma of missing lap, otherwise it would have been a no go for mom and the kids.
“Luckily we had our positioning crew on board and wonderful Tom took the task of being the extra-lap. Don’t you find them quite adorable.”
The photo immediately went viral with over a thousand likes. It is not known who the mother was or where the plane was flying but Ms Niemela posted the picture from Helsinki airport.
Mr Nystrom told Fox News that he understood the mum’s struggles as he has children of his own too. “I have children of my own… so it came natural to me to help this customer with her babies,” he said.
People who have seen the photo commended Mr Nystrom’s initiative. One wrote: “This is incredibly inspiring and kind. I’ve travelled alone with my babies and it’s so hard. Having strangers show you this kind of kindness during this stressful time means more than anyone can know.
“Even offering to help with the baby so mom can go to the toilet is appreciated immensely. Thanks for sharing this story and restoring our faith in humanity.”
