A mum shared her tips a couple of years ago about sunscreen that not many people know! I certainly didn’t!
Mum Connie-Lee, from QLD, said she visited her dermatologist to have a mole checked and she was given some handy advice about sunscreen that most mums didn’t know.
In a Facebook post, she said her dermatologist, Dr C T Lee in Brisbane, asked about what sunscreen she uses and after listening to his advice, she said she felt she needed to share it to others as well.
“I’ve recently had a mole checked, everything is fine but he asked what sunscreen I used. I replied with the Banana Boat SPF 50+ spray on for myself and Banana Boat Sensitive SPF 50+ roll on for my kids,” she explains.
“He replied with shaking his head! He then proceeded to tell me to ignore the ’30, 40, 50 +’ on the front cos it’s irrelevant. My mouth dropped as this is what we are all taught to look for!”
Instead, Dr Lee urged her to take a closer look at the back of her sunscreen bottle, taking particular note of the ingredients that will tell if the sunscreen is effective or not, and she was told to look for two particular ingredients Titanium and Zinc.
She said that Dr Lee explained that these are the secret weapons needed to protect the skin from sunburn. However, sometimes, these ingredients are lost when the cream is turned to the popular spray form, which then leaves little protection.
Speaking with Kidspot, Connie-Lee explains:
“The doctor told my husband and I that SPF is not the important thing to be looking for, he said what you need to do is turn the product over and make sure it had the titanium and zinc products. They are the products that protect you.
“Also they are the ingredients that don’t get put into the aerosol can as they are a form of metal and can not be turned into aerosol form to leave the can and protect the body,” she said.
She said that Dr Lee recommended Sun Sense 50+ for sensitive skin as the best on the market. “He said [it] is the best one on the market and is sensitive for little ones skin! It’s very thick to use but at least you know it’s doing the job of protecting your family!” she said.

After posting the advice in 2017, Connie-Lee gained more than 13,000 reactions and over 19,500 shares, with comments mostly from other parents thanking her for sharing.
Yet, Kidspot’s resident GP, Dr Sam Hay, pointed out that applying often and adding further protection is still the key to staying sunburn free no matter what sunscreen you use.
“It still needs to be applied regularly (every two hours or after swimming/towelling), and used with other sun protection measures such as hats, sunglasses, clothes, and staying in the shade,” he said.
