A mother has revealed the heart-wrenching moment her five-year-old daughter who has an aggressive form of cancer broke down in tears as her hair was shaved off.
Despite being concerend, Natasha McGregor, from Queensland, initially thought her daughter, Havana, only had restless legs syndrome when in November last year, Havana began tossing and turning while trying to get to sleep and was in pain.
Doctors said that it could be just growing pains.
In August 12 this year, Havana was so excited for her brand new purple bicycle that was given as a gift for her fifth birthday, that she tried it out, when suddenly, she started limping badly. Ms McGregor thought Havana might have pulled a muscle from riding the bike.
However, Havana’s hips started swaying and she continued to scrape her toes when walking, and so she was rushed to Sunshine Coast University Hospital where an MRI was done and the results shocked the whole family.
The results revealed that Havana had a tumour in her pelvic floor, right near her spine.
“It was like a smack in the face”¦ I sat there and said ‘you’re wrong, my daughter does not have this’,” Ms McGregor told 7 News Online.
But what broke her heart was when Havana’s hair had all to be chopped off. “She just broke down in tears and said she wasn’t beautiful anymore,” she told the Sunshine Coast Daily.
Ms McGregor said that they always tell Havana how precious she is and what matters is one’s inner beauty. “We remind her every day that it is what’s on the inside that counts, and she is coming to terms with that, finding confidence. We will say, Havana, you are bloody beautiful inside and out, don’t you ever forget that,” she said.
Havana’s aunt, Paulette Farrugia has started a GoFundMe page to raise money to help cover the family’s medical expenses.
Doctors said that Havana has eight out of ten chances at making a full recovery since her mother caught the tumour early,
