A mum has invented a device that will revolutionise the way families with babies travel.

Mother-of-two, Emma Lovell may have just made what many families, travelling with distressed and upset babies and tired of other passengers’ clearly irritated glances, have long been waiting for.

Introducing the Fly Babee — a canopy that fits onto the airline-issued bassinets, cutting out light and to some extent, noise.

“It’s like a little bag that unzips and pops up, like one of those pop-up laundry bags,” Ms Lovell said.

She said that the bassinets provided by the airline were not really a good solution for her because she found they were often near bathrooms or service areas, which were busy and loud.

“It provides a really lovely, cozy dome that blocks out 97 per cent of light and it’s 100 per cent breathable and air permeant “” it essentially allows air to flow as if it wasn’t there. It’s got a rainbow opening so you can get baby in without taking it off, plenty of kick space and a little peephole to check up on them.

Ms Lovell, a high school teacher from Sydney, experienced the stress herself when she had to make several trips, with a baby in tow, to the UK to visit her sick mum.

She said that her daughter is used to travelling but could not sleep properly on board a flight. “My daughter was a really good traveller but she just could not sleep with the distractions, with the cabin lights going on and off, the person in the next seat turning on their reading light, the food service interruptions, the entertainment screens and every now and then someone smiling and waving at her,” she said, and so she thought of inventing the Fly Babee.

“I think the worst thing is the fear of what other people are going to think “” that takes over from the concern of why your baby’s crying in the first place.

“You’re trying to comfort the baby but you’re mostly worried about the huffing and puffing from people who A, have no children, B, have left their kids at home, or C, have grown-up children and have completely forgotten how hard it is to travel with a baby.

“So many people are very judgmental and there’s very few of those looks that are sympathetic. It’s mostly glares from people that seem to say, ‘Feed it, or kill it’,” she told news.com.au.

Before using the Fly Babee, Ms Lovell suggests getting the baby used to the cover before taking a plane trip.

She said that there is also a “little pocket inside” for gadgets to play lullabies. The device can also be fitted on prams and used in cars and has a UVP 50+ rating.

Ms Lovell won the Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year title at the AusMumpreneur Awards and her invention has attracted approximately 50 retailers.
