Husband Who Refused To Switch Off His Wife’s Life Support After A Stroke, Welcomes Their Baby

A husband, who has refused to switch off his wife’s life support after a heart attack and stroke, has revealed they have welcomed a baby after his wife’s miraculous recovery.

Alexander Way, 44, was left devastated after his wife, Beatrice, 42, suffered a stroke and a heart attack at their home in the village of Ugley, Essex, six years ago.

The couple were moving into their home when Beatrice suddenly felt ill and suffered a heart attack. Ambulance paramedics arrived and took her to hospital where she slipped into a coma two days later.

Doctors told Alexander his worst nightmare. “The doctors insisted Beatrice had very little brain response and that there was no way she could ever improve. If she did wake up at all she would barely respond to others. She would also be blind,” Alexander said.

However, despite all these, Alexander remained firm in keeping his wife alive.

“A lot of words were exchanged. In no uncertain terms I told them, ‘Don’t switch off my wife’s life support’,” he said, adding that he was furious that doctors were considering ending his wife’s life and even asking him if he would donate her organs for transplants.

“I was stunned, angry and felt they were ending my wife’s life without considering further treatment. I was adamant that more could be done,” he said.

So, Beatrice was transferred to a neurosurgical unit where she received specialist treatment.

After four weeks, Beatrice woke up in hospital. There, she learned she had suffered the attack due to a heart defect called congenital hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

The following nine months were a series of intensive rehabilitation after her left leg and arm were left paralysed.

Doctors warned the couple about falling pregnant, but the couple were headstrong and decided to have a baby.

In June last year, the couple welcomed, baby Rosemary.

Alexander shared his story hoping that other couples who are experiencing similar situation will know that it is possible to continue when their relatives are desperately ill.

“That is something we feel quite strongly about. It is vital to explore all the options before agreeing to life and death decisions about loved ones. I have no doubt whatsoever that prayer kept us going in our darkest days. It was so important to us throughout it all.

“I am truly blessed to have Beatrice and Rosemary. We owe the miracle of Beatrice’s survival and Rosemary to God,” he said.

Beatrice was also thankful for her husband’s determination to save her life. “I am so grateful to Alexander for questioning the doctors who thought my life was over. He saved my life,” she said.
