10 Surprising Things You Must Know Before Travelling to Italy

6. One Does Get Sick of Eating Cheese

I adore cheese. I eat it every day. I was so excited about visiting Italy because I had heard about their amazing cheeses… but they offer so much of it — and they are all so good!  Here are the most common types found:

  • Mozzarella
  • Gorgonzola
  • Mascarpone
  • Parmesan
  • Scamorza
  • Pecorino

7.  The Food is Fantastic!

Don’t worry so much about pizza and pasta — it is the other stuff that are amazeballs. The tomatoes are unbelievable. The olive oil is the best in the world. The bread is drool-worthy. The cured meats, the wine — oh my, I could go on and on. If you are a foodie, you will find Italy a paradise!

8. Cobblestones Are A Bitch to Walk On

All the old parts of the towns are still built with cobblestones, and they are beautiful. They are also really hard on ones ankles. Wear really good, really supportive shoes — and watch your step carefully!

9. Pickpockets and Beggars

Like any big cities, you need to watch your possessions closely and carefully. You will find in the main plaza’s are people offering you free roses, bracelets etc.: DO NOT ACCEPT THEM! Just keep walking past briskly — don’t engage. There are also loads of beggars. Some might be genuine, some might not be. Personally I didn’t want to give the lady money when she was wearing a bag from Prada.

10.  The Statue of David in the Main Square of Florence isn’t the Real David!

I actually thought this picture I took was the real one but. much to my dismay, found out that it wasn’t! Oh well!

The real statue of David was originally placed at the entrance to the Palazzo della Signoria, the city town hall, which is now called the Palazzo Vecchio. However, in order to protect it from damage, it has been transferred for display in the Accademia Gallery where it still attracts visitors. The one pictured above is now a replica that has been placed there since 1910.

11.  The Wine!!!

Okay, I cheated and added one more — but this last thing on the list isn’t something that will surprise you whether it’s your first or tenth time in Italy. After all, isn’t the country well known for it’s superbly delicious wine? Well, I sure had the chance to taste the best among their best. I just had to, I can’t miss the chance whilst I’m there, right?

I highly recommend you guys trying out Zonin Prosecco, it’s definitely at the top of the best list!
