How Do I Become a Social Media Influencer?

To become an influencer – you need just that – influence!  That means a following on one of the many social media platforms. Your ‘brand’ ie you – need to be about something.  Are you passionate about makeup?  Do you love movies?  Is the environment all you ever talk about?  Then that is your niche.

So if you watch Youtube constantly and you love to talk about sports, then look at becoming a Sports Youtuber…

Fun Fact:  Nearly 20% of active Youtubers under the age of 17 said when they grow up, they want to be an influencer!

Becoming a Social Media Influencer may look like great fun from the outside, but it is an incredible amount of work, dedication and hours.

How Many Followers Do I Need to Have To Get Paid Work?

Everyone has to start somewhere.  If you don’t have enough followers to gain any paid work – you need to work on increasing those follower numbers.  The ‘experts’ say that in order to start charging for work you need an average of 3000 followers – but realistically that number is closer to 10,000.

Don’t despair if you don’t have those kinds of numbers. Keep doing what you are doing – and do it well and just have fun with it.

My biggest advice to aspiring influencers is to just be yourself – and whatever works – keep doing it!

What Types of Influencers Are There?

There are many types of influencers and subsets within that category.  But in broad terms, the main types of influencers are:

YoutuberInstagrammerTic Tok
VloggerBrand AmbassadorsBlogger
ActivistsJournalistsPhotographers
CelebritiesReality TV StarsSports Stars
Actors and Actresses

Generally, if you can think of a niche – there is an influencer in that category!

Subsets of Influencers Include:

  • Gaming
  • Sports
  • Entertainment
  • Beauty
  • Comedy Sketches
  • Education
  • Music
  • Film

Most of the largest influencers fit into these categories.

The Types of Influencers by Follower Count

Influencers can then be sorted into the following categories:

  • Nano Influencers (1k – 10K followers)
  • Micro Influencers (10K – 100K followers)
  • Macro Influencers (100K – 1M followers)
  • Mega or Celebrity Influencers (1M+ followers)

Social Media is All About Image

No I’m not saying you need to be a 6 foot blonde bombshell with DD boobs to get work. You just need to be yourself!  But you do need shit hot photographs – for every social media platform.  Invest in good quality, individual photos that really show you being you. Employ a photographer that has vision!

There is a load of different work you can get as an influencer – depending on what sort of influencer you are!  Here is a rough guide:

  • Sponsored Articles
  • Videos with Product Placement

Influencers with websites can then go on to do a variety of more jobs including banner placement, affiliate marketing etc.

Who is Doing it Now?

A few years ago the space was saturated with startup influencers which really affected the professionals.  Many of these have now fallen by the wayside (I think many don’t realise just how hard the industry is) – and the number has now evened out.  Many brands that employ influencers are also more aware of how to read the statistics influencers now have to provide. You see back in the old days (which was only about five to seven years ago) follower numbers could be easily fudged – and many people bought likes which skewed the real number of passionate followers.

Luckily those days are over now and it is practically impossible to fudge numbers – which is great for the real influencers with real followers.

You only have to see some of the huge Youtube Influencers now to know that influencer marketing is absolutely massive.

Some of the largest Youtubers in the world and their subscribers:

  • Dude Perfect – 47.5 million subscribers (Sports Influencer)
  • Mr Beast – 90 million subscribers (Gaming Influencer)
  • PewDiePie – 111 million subscribers (Gaming Influencer)
  • Like Nastya Vlog – 86.3 million subscribers (Entertainment Influencer)
  • T-Series – 206 million subscribers (Music Influencer)

Of course, the Americans dominate when it comes to major influencers – but we have a few biggies here in Australia too:

Ensuring The Influncer Work is a Good Fit

When applying for any influencer work – you need to ensure that the brand you intend on working with is a good fit for you.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Would you buy the product/service with your own money?
  2. Would you recommend the product or service to your friends or family?
  3. If no one was listening, would you still use it?

If all answers are YES – then the brand is a great fit.  If not – you should either pass or not apply.  Brands HATE it when you waste their time and they can sniff out a faker really quickly.  So don’t waste their time and yours.  Only work with brands that are a good fit for you and your audience.

As an influencer, you will probably say no to more opportunities than you say yes to – but that’s what will make you an epic influencer. Authenticity is the key!

Applying for Influencer Jobs

We have a list on the next page of the platforms you use to apply for jobs – but a little instruction on how to go about applying for jobs as an influencer.

Be positive, engaging and read through the application carefully and make sure you fulfil all the criteria – just like applying for a normal job.  Always ensure you include all of your social media handles and your contact details – the amount of applicants I have seen that haven’t included a phone number is baffling!

Never start a message to a potential client with ‘To Whom it May Concern’.  This just shows you haven’t done your homework!  Do your research, find out more about the brand, who you will be addressing and their position in the company.  LinkedIn is a great place to research companies and position titles.

How Much Should I Charge?

The larger your following, the more money you can charge for anything!  But my rule of thumb is to start small until you start getting a bit of work, then start slowly increasing your price as you become more popular.

“My first sale was a 125 x 125 banner on my website promoting fairy clothing which is charged $15 per month.” – Jody Allen (Stay at Home Mum.com.au)

Don’t get into the habit of taking on all work for free – brands will expect it to always be free!
