Method

Rub butter into flour with fingertips.

In a small bowl, mix together the egg and milk and stir into the flour mixture.

Using a tablespoon, roll mixture into balls.

Combine syrup ingredients in a saucepan and bring to the boil.

Carefully drop dough balls into syrup and boil for 20 minutes. Do not overcrowd saucepan as the balls will expand.

Remove balls from syrup when puffy and golden. Drizzle with syrup. Allow to stand for 2 minutes before serving.
