Hot Cross Buns are really good fun to make at home – get the kids involved too! This is the traditional recipe – but we will also be putting up Chocolate and a few other delectable flavours!
Method

Preheat oven to 190 Degrees.

Heat the milk and butter together and leave to cool slightly.

Sift the flour, spices and salt together.

Add the sugar, yeast and sultanas.

Stir in the warm milk and butter and the egg.

Knead well until smooth (about 10 minutes).

Cover and leave in a warm place for approximately one hour or until the dough has doubled in size.

Knead for a few minutes more until smooth.

Divide into 12 medium sized balls and place on a greased baking tray.

Cover and leave in a warm place for 10 minutes or until the buns have risen.

Place the paste for the crosses in a piping bag and pipe crosses on top of the buns.

How to make Paste: Mix the flour and sugar together and add enough water to make a smooth paste.

Bake for 15 - 20 minutes at 190 degrees.

When the buns are still hot from the oven brush with the hot glaze.

How to make Glaze: Heat the milk and sugar together without boiling.
Recipe Hints and Tips:
- Cooled buns can be frozen in an air-tight container or zip lock bag for up to six weeks.
- Serve with butter and golden syrup.
