A woman has been shot dead by a man at a Gold Coast McDonald’s this morning. The man, who was “known to her”, then turned the gun on himself.
Terrified customers and staff witnessed the slaying this morning at about 9.20 at the fast food outlet on Siganto Drive, Helensvale.
Detective Inspector Mark Whyte confirmed to news.com.au that the woman and man arrived separately at the restaurant, where he followed the woman into the dining area and allegedly shot her in the head.
The man, who turned the gun on himself, was disarmed at the scene and taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital with critical head injuries.
Ambulance officers tried to revive the woman, but she died at the scene. Her body remains at the location while police investigate.
The woman’s sister-in-law, who arrived minutes after the shooting, broke down to police.
“When she put her head on my shoulder and started crying I could barely hold back my own tears,” Sgt John Cass said.
The distraught McDonald’s staff who saw the shooting have been released from the restaurant and will receive counselling. All witnesses were taken to Coomera Police Station to give statements.
