Two Young Sisters Drowned in Backyard Pool

Two sisters, aged three and four, died after drowning in a family backyard pool yesterday as it was revealed that their five-year-old brother raised the alarm.

Mother-of-five, Renise Young desperately tried to resuscitate her daughters, three-year-old Patricia and four-year-old Taya, after they were found by her five-year-old son, Aige, floating in the pool at the back of their Kingston home about 1.30pm yesterday. She said she heard Aige shouting for help and ran to find that his two younger sisters had got through the pool gate and entered the water.

The tragedy happened just after the family had finished lunch and the girls were preparing to go for a swim in the freshly cleaned pool, but when they could not be found, Ms Young and husband Troy started searching for them until Aige found his younger sisters in the pool soon after.

The parents immediately performed CPR and called emergency services — but it wasn’t enough and the two girls could not be revived. “I was screaming and grabbing them and making sure their head was above the water and just yelling because there was nothing I could do,” Ms Young said.

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious, but detectives and Logan City council inspectors were trying to determine how the two sisters were able to enter the pool area. It was learned that the backyard pool is fully fenced, and inspectors are assessing whether the fence was of an appropriate standard. Police are also investigating whether the girls used a nearby outdoor chair or a trampoline to access the pool area.

Inspector Glen Allen from Queensland police, however, said that the parents will face questions about supervision.
