Two mothers have invented a ‘portable change room’ that allows one to comfortably change in public, without accidental flashing.
Mums Manuela Rocker, 51, from Manly, and Megan Wisheart, 55, from Clontarf in Sydney’s north shore were enjoying an afternoon barbecue at home when they saw a man in the street who has a towel wrapped around his waist as he attempts to change his pants in public, but suddenly, the towel dropped….and you can imagine the rest!
At that moment, both mothers thought of creating something so there’s no more accidental flashing. That’s when Change Mate — a multi-purpose design that works as portable change room — was hatched.
Change Mate is a skirt-like design that fastens around your waist, chest or neck with toggles, depending on your height. It has pockets that allow you to slip your hands inside and get changed underneath, without the risk of the towel falling.
Ms Rocker told Daily Mail Australia that the product was originally for men. However, women soon became interested and so women and children became their main clientele.
“We started manufacturing and a few went out for feedback and it turns out the guys ignored us, they just didn’t care if they were dropping their towels. It turns out the wives were more interested,” Ms Rocker said.
With this, the mothers tweaked their design so that it not only worked as a portable change room, but zipped up to a duffle beach bag and unfolded to a towel.
People can also use it at the beach, and is also handy for children who do dancing or sport requiring them to get changed.
“We got a look of feedback from mothers that it’s also useful if you have two children and need to change them both. It’s really handy for safety and security,” Ms Rocker said.
The Change Mate is made with lightweight terry towelling, but also comes in a waterproof model. Its pockets have overlapping fabric inserts that prevent people from being able to see in when you change underneath. It also has a large pocket where you can store your valuables.
The mothers, who also work together designing jewellery, are the ones who designed the print on the Change Mate fabric. They have launched a Kick Starter campaign to get the project to manufacturing stage. They said that once on sale, the Change Mate will retail for $99 ($79 for early birds).
