A one-year-old girl has died after drowning in a backyard swimming pool in Sydney’s southwest, while a 22-month-old boy is in critical condition after a near-drowning incident.
Police say that the girl was found floating in the pool in Raby in Sydney’s southwest at about 4.15pm on Sunday.
The toddler was pulled from the water and paramedics who were called, worked on the girl after she went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Campbelltown Hospital by ambulance where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The tragedy came after a 22-month-old boy fell into a backyard pool in Castle Hill, north-west of Sydney, at 4pm on Saturday and is now fighting for his life.
The boy was said to have been splashing about in a backyard swimming pool for five minutes before he almost drowned.
He was revived by family members and paramedics at the scene before he was airlifted the Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.
However, A NSW police spokeswoman declined to say if the boy was unsupervised. They may investigate if the pool fence complied with safety standards and ask The Hills Shire Council to take a closer look at the incident.
