Three 12-year-old girls in the UK were rushed to hospital after taking ecstasy pills.
Greater Manchester Police said that the girls took a type of ecstasy known as “Teddy Tablets” in Salford on Saturday.
Officers were alerted by North West Ambulance Service around 9.50pm after reports that a girl was overdosing. They found one of the girls at the precinct, who told them about her two friends, who police found in separate locations — one in Belvedere Road, Salford, and one in Trafford Road about an hour later.
Police believe the children took the drug after it was mixed in a bottle of soft drink. They are now investigating how the children got hold of the potentially lethal drugs.
Police said that a man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a controlled substance. The pair are now being held in custody for questioning.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Walker warned young people against taking the party pill.
“It is imperative young people understand the implications and avoid taking drugs, to stop any more young people ending up in hospital. We will continue to repeat our warnings in the hope that young people will think twice before taking drugs, after seeing the damage they cause to lives,” he said.
It is believed that the girls are among the youngest people in the UK to have fallen ill after taking the drug.
The girls are now in stable condition.
