This is the emotional moment a critically ill teenager received the news that her dream of having a heart transplant will soon come true.
Macey Wright, 14, was born with a congenital heart defect and had undergone a number of critical operations to stay alive, including two open heart surgeries when she was just 11 years old, and her mum, Patrice said that having a heart transplant was her “last hope.”
Patrice can be heard telling Macey, “Okay, [the hospital] just called. They said they don’t know for sure but that we need to get ready.” As soon as Macey heard these words, she got excited and began to cry tears of joy.
Finally, on August 30, doctors at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Utah in the US operated on Macey and transplanted a new heart into her chest.
Her mother, Patrice has posted several updates on Macey’s condition since the surgery. She wrote, “Heart is in and beating! Party in the waiting room.”
The following day, Patrice posted: “Macey has a breathing tube, chest tubes, IV’s, pacemaker, lots of drugs ect (sic). She just needs to sleep and heal now. We will take it one day at a time but she is a rock star and so is this new heart!”
The day after that, Patrice again posted a picture of Macey in a hospital bed listening to her new heart with a doctor’s stethoscope. “Breathing tube is out and someone wanted to hear her new heart beat. It sounds wonderful and so strong!”
ABC reports Macey hopes to become an advocate for organ donation.
