It’s been 20 years since the Spice Girls’ “Girl Power” anthem Wannabe soared to the top of the charts – and to mark the occasion a new video featuring the song has been released to say what women and girls around the world really, really want.
The video is backed by Posh Spice Victoria Beckham and features famous performers from the UK, Nigeria, Canada and India holding up signs indicating what women want to improve their lives.
This includes an end to violence against girls, a quality education for all girls, a stop to child marriage and equal pay for equal work.
The featured stars include British girl band M.O., Canadan Taylor Hatala, Larsen Thompson from the US, South Africans Gigi Lamayne and Monoea, Nigerian Seyi Shay and Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez from Sri Lanka.
It was released by Project Everyone, a campaign group that was founded by the Ricard Curtis, a filmmaker who made the hit movie Love Actually.
At the end of the video, viewers are encouraged to post photos of themselves to local media with signs saying what they “really really want” for women.
It reads: “GIRL POWER goes global to achieve #GlobalGoals. This is our message to world leaders #WhatIReallyReallyWant.”
The creators of the video are hoping to lobby world leaders who agreed to the United Nations’ Global Goals for Sustainable Development in 2015 by presenting responses to the video to the UN General Assembly in September.
In a statement, Victoria Beckham said:”I think this film is a wonderful idea. How fabulous it is that after 20 years, the legacy of the Spice Girls’ Girl Power is being used to encourage and empower a whole new generation.
