New Study Reveals How Miscarriage May Be Prevented Through Hormone Treatment

A new study has revealed that a well-timed dosage of progesterone may help prevent miscarriage.

A new study published in the journal, Fertility and Sterility, shows that women who have previously experienced miscarriage have a bigger chance of successfully carrying a pregnancy to term when given the treatment regime, which involved inserting supplements of the hormone into the vagina in the second half of the menstrual cycle.

The study was done on a group of women who previously had two or more ‘unexplained pregnancy losses’ not more than 10 weeks into their pregnancies. The results showed that two thirds of the participants delivered their babies successfully after the administration of the progesterone.

It’s believed that the progesterone helps maintain a healthy uterus lining in the critical days following fertilisation. This helps the zygote to successfully implant into the wall of the uterus.

While the study shows the treatment is successful in helping prevent miscarriage, further research is required.
