A mother has given birth to probably the heaviest girl in the world weighing 15 pounds.
A 19-year-old mother, known only as Nandini, was surprised after she gave birth to her daughter who weighs the same as an average six-month-old baby.
The baby was born via Caesarean section in India on Monday weighing a staggering 15lbs, twice the size of an average baby, which typically weighs about 7lb 5oz.
Nandini and her husband, Arun married two years ago and were excited about having their first child. Nandini, who weighs 94kg and is 5’9 tall, said she had a smooth pregnancy but was not aware that she was about to give birth to a huge baby.
Dr Poornima Manu, gynaecologist who delivered the baby said that Nandini had made regular visits for check-ups at the hospital and have not shown signs of gestational diabetes or thyroid disorders. Dr Manu said that the surgery took place for nearly half an hour and was free of any risk.
“She does not have any health issues like irregular sugar levels or thyroid and is breathing well. We were initially concerned about her sugar levels but that is normal,” Dr Manu said.
The baby is now at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit where doctors are monitoring her developments before they discharge her in few days, but both the mother and the child are doing fine.
Dr Venkatesh Raju, the local health officer, said that the baby is not only the heaviest baby born in India but probably the heaviest baby girl ever born in the world.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest baby ever born weighed 23lbs 12oz in Canada in 1879, but the baby died 11 hours later. In November last year, an Indian woman, Firdous Khatun had given birth to the a baby boy weighing 14.77 lbs, who was the heaviest baby born in India.
