Police were called to a home in Brompton Street, Alexandra Hills just before midnight on Tuesday after a stabbing. The original triple-0 call mentioned children walking dazed in the street, covered in blood.
First responders did indeed find blood-soaked and screaming children in the street near the house, unattended by an adult. They described the scene as “horrific”. Inside there were two men, “one dead the other almost dead”, according to Inspector Rob Graham.
The children and the former wife of one of the men witnessed the stabbing. The individual who died was in a “new relationship” with a 37-year-old woman who resided at the address. According to reports, the relationship was quite recent.
Police allege the woman’s former husband, aged 39, entered the home by force and fatally stabbed her new partner.
via nzherald.co.nz“It will be alleged that the accused killer is the former husband of the female from this address,” Insp Graham said, speaking to media at the scene.
According to early reports, the ex-husband also had serious stab wounds, which police are certain are self-inflicted.
“You can well imagine what the kids or the ex-partner have been through,” said Inspector Graham.
A female neighbour in the street told the Today show that she heard a man scream the phrase “stay with your mother” and then the sound of children’s voices. Not long after police and ambulances arrived and “lit the whole neighbourhood up”.

Inspector Graham reminded the community again in the wake of the tragedy that domestic violence was never the answer.
“As we move towards Christmas emotions are going to be high…This isn’t the answer. There is plenty of help out there available. The consequences for the kids…Six lives have been affected here.”
The 39-year-old behind the stabbing is in a critical condition at Princess Alexandra Hospital.
