A school bus driver in the US has been hailed a hero after pulling 20 children to safety from a burning bus.
The driver has been identified as Reneita Smith – a bus driver in College Park, Maryland.
Ms Smith was driving children home on Monday when the bus suddenly caught fire before 4.45pm.
Her heroism didn’t go unnoticed as a parent took to Facebook to thank Ms Smith for her heroic deeds.
“A big THANK YOU to our school bus driver Reneita Smith who just saved 20 elementary school kids from a bus fire that completely destroyed the bus,” Fazlul Kabir said.
“Reneita [not only] took each one of the 20 kids from the bus one by one, but also went into the empty bus again to check if everyone was out, while it was still burning,” he said.
Mr Kabir also included the response of Ms Smith, who shrugged off her status as a hero, when he thanked her.
“I am a mum of two kids. It’s my job to save them,” Mr Kabir recalled Ms Smith saying.
The cause of the bus fire is currently under investigation.
