Four of the six children allegedly responsible for fires at three shopping centres in southeast Queensland, have been charged.
Four children, aged between 10 and 13, have been charged with several offences including endangering particular property by fire, enter premises with intent and stealing, while two nine-year-old boys have been dealt with by police under the Youth Justice Act.
The fires were believed to be deliberately lit inside shopping centres at Loganholme, Sunnybank Hills and Fairfield this month and caused considerable damage.
On Monday, the fire at the Logan Hyperdome prompted a complete evacuation and caused over $140,000 worth of damage, including loss of trade.
Detective Acting Inspector Peter Waugh said the consequences could have been worse and he advised parents to supervise their children. “Lighting a fire in a shopping centre is reckless behaviour which could result in an absolute tragedy. We would urge all parents to ensure they have responsible supervision arrangements in place for their children,” he said.
