A couple have been arrested after their twin babies were found ‘looking like skeletons’ and ‘crawling with maggots’.
New parents Kevin Fowler, 25, and Aislyn Miller, 24, from Owasso, Oklahoma in the US were taken to Tulsa County Jail on Saturday after police discovered their extremely malnourished babies, with bed sores and severe nappy rash.
KJRH reported that a nurse told officers that she saw a maggot crawl out of one of the babies’ genital area, while the other baby had a piece of hair wrapped so tightly around her finger that it had festered and become a wound. Reports alleged that faeces were also found in one of the babies’ ears.
Owasso police were alerted to the city’s care centre to see the infants’ condition after reports of suspected abuse.
Ms Miller told police that she and her husband had no experience taking care of babies, and so, their babies’ health was poor.
Tulsa World reported that Ms Miller also told police she didn’t have any health insurance and didn’t know how to provide proper healthcare for the babies and neither child had been examined by a doctor since birth.
The couple are being held on a $US50,000 ($66,900) bond.
