A coroner has found that a nine-year-old girl found dead in school toilets ‘did not mean to kill herself.”
Stuff.co.nz reported that Coroner Carla na Nagara has found that the girl tragically took an impulsive step to end the distress that had built up in her life in the two days prior to her death.
The girl died on November 4, 2015, in Palmerston North in New Zealand’s North Island after being found lifeless in a bathroom at her school the day before.
The girl, the school, and other people involved cannot be named because of a suppression order for the case.
Despite the girl’s death being considered self-inflicted, Coroner Na Nagara said there was not enough evidence to rule that the girl commited suicide, and during the hearing, said that she had reservations about ruling it a suicide.
Na Nagara believed that the girl’s behaviour leading up to her death was not similar with those that are typically exhibited by suicidal young people in these instances.
