Scientists have found an amazing new benefit to being on pill.
Apart from keeping you from being up the duff when you don’t want to be.
It appears that hormonal birth control might be playing a role in preventing serious sports injuries, according to researchers from the University of Texas.
The study, published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, analysed the insurance claims and prescription information for 23,428 women aged between 15 and 39.
The data revealed that women on hormonal birth control were less likely to have anterior cruciate ligament injuries (ACL) that were so serious they would need knee surgery. The data also revealed that those aged between 15 and 19 who needed surgery were 18% less likely to be on birth control.
Boys and girls have equal rates of ACL injuries, common for those playing sports, before they reach puberty. After puberty, however, girls are twice as likely to sustain an ACL injury.
Researchers believe that oestrogen may be playing a role, possibly even weakening the ligament and making it more vulnerable to injury.
The study suggests that regulating oestrogen levels through taking the pill may help prevent ACL injuries being more serious.
