4. Don’t shop when you’re hungry
If you go shopping when you are hungry, you very well might find yourself filling the trolley up with food you don’t need. Make sure you eat before you go. You’ll be less likely to stock up on junk food too, so not only will you save money, but it’s also better for your waistline!
5. Buy less pre-made stuff
If you’re buying pre-made soups, frozen meals, biscuits, cakes and so on, you have the convenience of saving time on your side. But if you commit to making things from scratch or as close to from scratch as you can get away with you’ll save heaps of money.
6. Eat more veggies
A plant-based diet is much cheaper to follow than a meat-based one. However, going vegetarian isn’t for everyone. Consider even dropping one meat meal per week to cut costs. I try to have “Meat-free Monday” in my house where we eat a vegetable-based main meal one day a week (if you find some good vegetarian recipes, hubby won’t even complain too much.)
7. Grow your own veggies and herbs
A great way to cut back on your food bills is to grow your own veggies and herbs. It doesn’t matter if you have a big yard or just a porch. You can grow some veggies and herbs in pots. Every little bit counts!
If you buy fresh herbs from the supermarket like parsley or coriander, you can easily spend $3 or $4 a pop. If you have your own growing in the garden you can just cut some off as you need it, forever.
