Vaginal Cannabis

5 min read

Yes you heard right, vaginal cannabis exists and it’s no laughing matter”¦ or is it?

A California-based business offers its clients menstrual pain relief using vaginal cannabis, claiming it is a “holistic way of reducing pain during severe cramps.”

“Our products bring to your fingertips the power of ancient plant medicine to activate deep healing and unlock profound pleasures,” the Foria website reads. Hand-crafted from the female flower of the marijuana plant – one of the oldest known plant aphrodisiacs and analgesics in the world – using modern extraction techniques for optimal potency and purity.”

While the suppositories are currently only available in California and Colorado (two American states that allow the use of marijuana), the business owners have ambitions for a wider reach-out.

On their website, Foria explained the ingredients of the suppositories and how they work:

“Floria Relief contains both THC and CBD, the two key active cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis. Together they activate certain cannabinoid receptors in the pelvic region when introduced into the body via these specially formulated suppositories,” the statement read.

“The cannabinoids directly impact the immune system and the nerve endings of the uterus, cervix, ovaries and surrounding smooth muscle tissues. THC positively affects the nerves and assists in blocking out pain while also allowing for more pleasant signals to be received by the brain. CBD works in the immune system by suppressing the mechanisms responsible for inflammation.

“CBD also slows down electrical signalling to muscles and allows them to relax, thereby reducing cramping[3]. Foria Relief harnesses the power of these two cannabinoids to provide women with a safe and natural alternative to manage the cramps and pain they often experience while menstruating.”

It all sounds pretty technical, so could it be true?

Some women have already shared their positive experience with the marijuana suppositories online.

“Within 20 minutes, my cramps totally disappeared,” Mish Way wrote for Broadly. “What I was surprised about was the longevity. Midol will wear off after about half a work day, and during most periods I’ll pop six a day. But one Foria suppository did its job well into my evening.”

However, doctors are sounding the alarm because the “pot capsule” isn’t FDA (US Food and Drug administration) approved and there is not enough research on what potential risks users may be facing.

“Any medication needs to be fully evaluated for its risks and benefits before it can be classified as being safe for use. I would be very worried about women using this product before it has been fully evaluated,” Dr Helen Webberley told the Huffington Post.

On the Foria website, a Q&A section has been provided to answer questions about the products. We popped it below for you to make your own mind up… Enjoy!
