Experts Have The Last Word On The ‘Underwear In Bed’ Debate

For years, a debate has raged out of sight in Australia, under the covers of darkness in homes the nation over.

Should we be wearing underwear to bed?

In the minds of some, the ‘free-ballers’ the answer needs not be debated. It’s a definite NO. Sleeping is a time we’re supposed to be free. Our minds are free to wander in dreaming, and our genitals should be free as well. No waking up with red lines of judgement, just pure smooth and delightfully without the prison of undies.

For the others, the ‘cover alls’, the answer is clear. Absolutely yes. They just feel too… well too naked without their knickers, boxers, jocks and undies, so they want to keep them on. It’s not so much about freedom as it is about feeling comfortable, feeling like everything is in place. Plus if they need to wake up suddenly, say to evacuate the house, they’re one clothing step above the free-ballers, literally!

So What Do The Experts Say?

Sorry to the staunch underwear lovers, but the experts have weighed in on the debate and it turns out that it’s better for your junk, both for men and women to sleep without your underwear on.

Dr Alyssa Dweck, the co-author of the book V is for Vagina spoke to Show and Tell Online about her thoughts on the matter:

“I often tell my patients to sleep without underwear.”

When she elaborated on this advice, it became abundantly clear, and a little bit yuk-inducing, why pretty much everyone should be in the free-balling crew. For the ladies, she dropped this information bomb:

“If [the area] is constantly covered – especially by a fabric that’s not moisture-wicking or absorbent – moisture collects, [creating the] perfect breeding ground for bacteria or yeast.”

Yeast, great.

But there are other reasons to consider sleeping naked as well. Your quality of sleep is improved, as is your body image, the amount of fat around your belly, and even your cholesterol levels. Not to mention people who sleep naked tend to have more sex!

What About The Boys?

Boys, and men, aren’t getting off without a warning either when it comes to not opting for the birthday suit at bed time. Urologist Brian Steixner had a chat to Men’s Health and made it pretty clear that for guys, free-balling was definitely the way to go.

As well as apparently helping guys sleep better, ignite the metabolism, and improve your relationship with your partner, sleeping naked helps to protect the testicles and nurture the sperm. Those little tadpoles are a fussy bunch, and they like an ideal temperature that underwear just doesn’t provide. When the temperature in the ball room is too high, sperm production is way out of whack. Not good.

What About You?

So now that you know the deal, what camp do you sit in? Will you continue to sleep in your undies, or are you planning to jump the fence for the life of the free-baller? There’s nothing holding you back now, so what are you waiting for?
