In the past a bride’s shoes were given to the groom by the bride’s father to symbolise the transfer of ownership.  They were taken from her on the way to the ceremony.  Without shoes she couldn’t run away.

Carrying the Bride Over The Threshold

How about this for a throwback to “AOC”?  Apparently in the days of “Marriage by Capture”, the groom had to carry (drag) his new bride to the bridal chamber because, Guess what? She wasn’t all that keen.  In more recent times, it was considered “unladylike” to look to eager to go in, so the groom would carry her across the threshold.
