The Cake
The wedding cake started out as bread that was thrown at the bride to ensure fertility. The unmarried women at the wedding would crawl around on the floor to try and get a piece of the action much like the “bouquet toss” of modern times.
Then bread became sweet buns and finally the cakes we have today. Eating the cake is a sign that the guests wish the couple fertility and good fortune. So the bride organises small portions of cake to be handed out.
