Need to watch something new?
Stuck at home and want something decent to watch?
Here is Stay at Home Mum’s favourite TV Series that you MUST WATCH RIGHT NOW!!!
We’ve jot down some of our thoughts so you can have a bit of idea what you’re going to dive into.
1. Nashville
Why we recommend it:
“Nashville is just so bad, it’s good! It is like a soap opera on steroids… I just couldn’t stop watching it. And sometimes you need a tv series you don’t have to think about!”
“Oh, it’s easy to get 20,000 people to love you.” — Juliette
A little bit of ‘Days of our Lives’ but set to country music. I’m not a fan of country and/or western, but I adore the music in this show. Has a bit of a predictable story line, but with some hot fellas to perv at, and enough Aussies in there to keep it interesting, once you start watching, you won’t want to stop! It got canned at the end of the last season, but there was a worldwide uproar about it – and it has now been picked up by another producer and channel.
Plot: Rayna James (Connie Britton) is the Queen of Country Music in Nashville, but to stay relevant, she needs to reinvent herself, and her show. Enter Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) who is a talented pain in the arse singer that likes to squish everyone around her.
Look out for: Jonathon Jackson. He is so freaking adorable as ‘Avery’. He is what every woman wants! Clare Bowen is awesome as Scarlett, and she is an Aussie girl!
Best Parts: The songs are awesome, and it makes you want to go to Nashville.
Worst Part: The storyline can be so predictable, but it’s a bit like heroin (so I’ve heard) and you just keep wanting more!
2. Game of Thrones
Why we love it:
“It is an epic saga of mammoth proportions, and probably the best tv show ever made.”
“Winter is Coming…”
It isn’t the most talked about epic television show of all time for no reason! It isn’t the kind of show you watch whilst tending to kids, you need to pay attention to keep up with all the story lines and characters going on – but it is just simply a masterpiece and perhaps the best television series in history!
Plot: Literally a ‘Game of Thrones’. Five different families fighting to gain control of the throne.
Look out for: Dragons and nudity.
Best Parts: The costumes, the plot, the story – every part of this is just brilliant.
Worst Part: It isn’t on every night of the week.
3. Supernatural
Why we love it:
“It isn’t a secret I love Supernatural – it is currently in its very last season (the last season is a bit shit…) – but the early days were awesome. Think The X-Files with hot boys.”
“I’ll interrogate the cat.” — Castiel
Now about to debut its 12th season, Supernatural is one of my all time favourites. Think The X-Files – but with hot brothers. It just gets better every season without fail.
Plot: Supernatural is about two brothers, the Winchesters who are ‘Hunters’ who fight everything that goes ‘bump’ in the night. They even befriend an Angel who wears a trench coat and has no idea how to act like a human. The King of Hell is also so likeable!
Best Parts: Jensen Ackles and Jared Padeleckii who play the leads, are best friends in real life, and it really shows. Well acted, and they don’t take themselves too seriously.
Best Episode: ‘The French Mistake’
Worst Parts: None. There are a huge 22 episodes in every season!
4. Silicon Valley
Why we love it:
“If you work in the tech industry or own your own business, you will get a huge laugh out of this show. ”
“And your logo looks like a sideways vagina. I find that to be racist, don’t you?” — Erlich Bachmann
A hilarious comedy romp about a start-up tech company located in Silicon Valley. If you have anything to do with the internet business, you will love this show!
Plot: Richard has invented a new internet system that ‘compresses data’. He is an overnight success and calls his business ‘Pied Piper’. He has programmers, investors and assistants who help and hinder his progress – but he has no idea what he is doing. Plus their competition ‘Hooli’ is trying their best to wipe them out!
Best Part: Jared the homeless assistant who lives in their garage.
Worst Part: It only goes for 30 minutes an ep!
5. Ozark
A financial adviser drags his family from Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks, where he must launder money to appease a drug boss.
6. Homeland
Why we love it:
“It keeps you on the edge of your seat season after season. ”
“Just because I’m sleeping with him doesn’t mean I’d perjure myself to protect him.” — Allison
A very serious TV series about a soldier returning home from 8 years in captivity in Iraq. Carrie Mathison is a spy for the CIA, she is a manic depressive that rarely does what she is told, but is the best of the best – so the CIA put up with her bad behaviour. Now in its fifth season, this serious drama will have you on the edge of your seat!
Best Part: Claire Danes is brilliant as Carrie Mathison.
Worst Part: Damian Lewis is killed off in season two (boo).
Season Six is due to start in January 2017.
7. Sex Education
A teenage boy with a sex therapist mother teams up with a high school classmate to set up an underground sex therapy clinic at school.
8. Tiger King
A rivalry between big cat eccentrics takes a dark turn when Joe Exotic, a controversial animal park boss, is caught in a murder-for-hire plot.
9. Better Call Saul
Why we love it:
“If you loved Breaking Bad, this spin-off showing where dodgy lawyer Saul Goodman got his start in the cartel world.”
“Don’t drink and drive. But if you do, call me.” — Saul Goodman
If you loved ‘Breaking Bad’, you will recognise Saul Goodman, the shady lawyer for the chemist teacher turned meth dealer Walter White. Better Caul Saul is a spin-off prequel to Breaking Bad, focusing on the life of Jimmy McGill, a hustler who reforms himself to become a lawyer, then represents the worst of the worst.
Best Parts: Seeing the background of all your favourite characters from Breaking Bad.
Worst Parts: Loads of violence… but realistic.
10. When They See Us
11. Orange is the New Black
Why we love it:
“The characters are broken and funny and you can’t help but love them.”
“It’s a metaphor, you potato with eyes!” — Pennsatucky
Piper Chapman is a prim and proper white girl from a rich family that got in trouble for smuggling drugs for her girlfriend ten years earlier and now has to pay the price by spending time 15 months in a women’s minimum security Federal prison. The premise is a true story (the first season is based on fact). The series is about the women she meets in prison and how she deals with life being incarcerated.
Best Parts: Tastee and Red, some really great strong female leads!
Worst Part: Oh Ruby Rose, get some acting lessons huh!
12. Breaking Bad
13. Black Mirror
Why we love it:
“Every episode is a stand-alone story. It is very clever and shocking.”
“It was any outcast’s nightmare. If I looked carefully, I suspected I might find it beneath the black paint of the small acrylic by the window.” — Nancy
Every episode of The Black Mirror is a different story with different characters. There are three stand-alone dramas that are sharp, suspenseful and satirical tales with a techno-paranois bent. Just absolutely brilliantly written and shot.
Best Part: Episode One.
Worst Part: There isn’t more!
14. Sense8
Why we love it:
“It is just so different from everything else!”
“In this country, sometimes the only place you can find a brave and honest woman is in prison.” — Prisoner 818
Okay, the idea of this show sounds so confusing – but hang in there – it is worth the ride! Eight different strangers around the globe all find themselves mentally ‘connected’ to each other and have an ability to share each other’s thoughts and actions. They work together to try and find out why them. In the meantime, a strange organisation is trying to use another person with the same abilities to ‘track them down’.
Best Part: The story is amazing and confusing…and amazing.
Worst Part: Getting your head around the story.
15. Unbelievable
16. Outlander
Why we love it:
“The sheer perv factor!”
“So you’re saying my ancestors are actually the war chief that you spoke of and the witch?” — Roger
I didn’t like the book so didn’t watch the series for ages, until I got sick and there wasn’t anything else to watch. Yes, it is hot. The sex scenes are sublime. Yes, the red-haired Scotsman is totally adorable. The plot is about a nurse in the British Army called Claire Randall who gets transported back in time to 1743. She marries Jamie Fraser (for protection) and they fall in love. The thing is – the person trying to kill Jaime is Claire’s husband in current times’ great grandfather.
Best Parts: Sassanach (said in a Scottish accent). Jamie Fraser in the nude.
Worst Part: The storyline can get slow at times. Claire loves to be ‘outraged’ all the time.
17. Longmire
Why we love it:
“Just a great story – worth watching!”
“This is why I don’t have a cellphone.” — Longmire
Longmire is based on a series of novels. I didn’t know that – but once I started watching this, I couldn’t stop. It is about a series of murders (always murders) in Wyoming. The Country Sheriff (Walt Longmire) is a widow struggling to get over the death of his wife. Assisted by his team and his lawyer daughter, they investigate all the major murders in the Wyoming area.
Best Part: Great story – although when you write it down, it doesn’t sound that way.
Worst Part: Wish it wasn’t always a murder they were trying to solve…
18. Spinning Out
A figure skating Olympic hopeful’s struggle to balance love, family and fragile mental health as her dream of winning takes a dizzying hold.
19. Banshee
Why we love it:
“Where do I start! Everyone is hot, there are lots of explosions, sex scenes and guns.”
“You better brace yourself. Here come the motherfucking neighborhood” — Job
A former criminal impersonates a new local sheriff in the small town of Banshee where he seeks his former lover (and fellow assasin) Carrie. He finds out he has a daughter. When he intervenes with a local crime gang, he gets in over his head with the ex-Amish crime lord, Kai Proctor. Lots of ‘catch em, fuck em, kill em’ type scenes. Loads of violence, fighting, blood, sex, and love. Lots of hotties too.
Best Part: Lucas Hood is played by Kiwi Antony Starr (who is hot hot HOT!). Plus big plus to Hoon Lee who plays gay Asian computer hacker Job – he really steals the show!
Worst Part: The story line is a tad predictable.
20. UnReal
Why we love it:
“So damn BITCHY!!!!”
“Look, just because I didn’t want your disease damaged sperm, doesn’t mean I don’t want a kid.” — Quinn
Set on a reality TV show like the Batchelor (but called Everlasting), there is more drama going on between the producers, directors and camera men then there are on screen. Lots of bitchiness, back-stabbing, cheating and lying. It is hard to stop watching!
Best Part: Was written by an ex-producer of The Batchelor from the US.
Worst Part: Rachael the main character needs to be slapped.
21. Billions
Why we love it:
“See how the rich got richer as they stab everyone in each other’s back.”
“What have I done wrong? Really? Except make money. Succeed. All these rules and regulations-arbitrary.” — Bobby Axelrod
Bobby Axelrod (played by Damien Lewis) made billions in the fall of the Twin Towers. He now runs a successful Hedge Fund based in Connecticut and his generosity to the local community has made him much loved. Now, the Government is trying to bring him down.
Best Part: Seeing how the other half lives.
Worst Part: Sometimes, the financial situations are very complicated to understand.
22. Drive to Survive
23. Next in Fashion
24. Vikings
Why we love it:
“It is made by the History Channel, so it is as close as possible to the real story. ”
“I learned from my father the only way to tell if something is real, is to sail there.” — Bjorn
Viking Ragnar Lothbrok is a chieftan in the 13th century who dreams of riches from strange lands over the water. Together with his friend Floki, they build a new design of longship to survive at sea for long periods. On discovering England, they raid the religious houses of their gold and take a local monk as a slave. Made by the History channel, it is based on real stories and legends from viking times. Just amazeballs!
Best Part: Aussie Travis Fimmel stars at Ragnar.
Worst Part: When Ragnar leaves his wife (the she-maiden Lagertha) for a Princess.
25. The Crown
Why we love it:
“A really well made series detailing the background of the Royal Family.”
Philip: “Are you my wife or my queen?”, Elizabeth: “I am both.”
The Crown focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world’s most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill. The British Empire is in decline, the political world is in disarray, and a young woman takes the throne…a new era is dawning. Peter Morgan’s masterfully researched scripts reveal the Queen’s private journey behind the public facade with daring frankness. Prepare to be welcomed into the coveted world of power and privilege and behind locked doors in Westminster and Buckingham Palace… the leaders of an empire await.
Best Part: Claire Foy is amazing as Queen Elizabeth.
Worst Part: Some parts were kind of boring.
26. Mindhunter
Set in the late 1970s, two FBI agents are tasked with interviewing serial killers to solve open cases.
27. You
28. Big Mouth
29. Schitt’s Creek
30. American Horror Story
Why we love it:
“So dark and creepy and different!”
“Don’t make me kill you again.” — Constance
“American Horror Story” was created by the co-creators of “Glee,” but the shows have little in common besides that. The show revolves around the Harmons, a family of three, who move from Boston to Los Angeles in order to reconcile past anguish. What the Harmons don’t know is that the house they’ve moved into is haunted. But it’s not haunted by Casperesque friendly ghosts — it’s haunted by demonic creatures. The creatures have a history of not only spooking the house’s residents but also devouring them. After living in this house, family patriarch and psychiatrist, Ben, may need a shrink of his own.
Best Part: If you’re a fan of real horror, how this show was made so creepy and weird will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Worst Part: McDermotts playing with himself scene. Ugh!
31. Succession
Succession follows a dysfunctional American global-media family.
32. Fleabag
33. 13 Reasons Why
Why we love it:
“See what everyone was talking about….”
“I hope you’re ready, because I’m about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And if you’re listening to these tapes, you’re one of the reasons why.” — Hannah Baker
Newcomer Katherine Langford plays the role of Hannah, a young woman who takes her own life. Two weeks after her tragic death, a classmate named Clay finds a mysterious box on his porch. Inside the box are recordings made by Hannah — on whom Clay had a crush — in which she explains the 13 reasons why she chose to commit suicide. If Clay decides to listen to the recordings, he will find out if and how he made the list. This intricate and heart-wrenching tale is told through Clay and Hannah’s dual narratives.
Best Part: Everytime Hannah speaks. It just gives me the chills.
Worst Part: Just painful and weighs heavy on the heart.
34. Fargo
35. American Gods
“Best thing, only good thing about being in prison, is the relief. You don’t worry if they’re going to get you when they already got you. Tomorrow can’t do anything today hasn’t already managed.” — Shadow
A recently released ex-convict named Shadow meets a mysterious man who calls himself “Wednesday” and who knows more than he first seems to about Shadow’s life and past.
Best Part: The dark humour and the sex scenes…
Worst Part: The story’s pace is quite slow.
36. Broadchurch
37. Episodes
38. The Haunting of Hill House
39. The Staircase
40. Riverdale
“He’ll be here tonight as the sun has its last shadow upon the earth and the crescent moon is risen upon the Eastern ridge.” — Jughead Jones
Archie Andrews starts the school year with the world weighing on his shoulders. He’s decided he wants to pursue a future in the music business, but his recently ended clandestine relationship with the music teacher has left him without a mentor, and his friendship with Jughead Jones is in a bad place. Things look like they might be turning around when Veronica Lodge, a new girl, arrives. Despite the instant chemistry, Veronica is hesitant to risk a friendship with Betty — who has a crush on Archie — to pursue anything. Amidst all the small-town banality lurks a mystery: the recent tragic death of Jason Blossom, the twin brother of beautiful and popular troublemaker, Cheryl.
Best Part: Our well-loved comics material comes alive — refreshing but can be dark and witty.
Worst Part: Hmmm… Riverdale just can’t seem to figure out what it wants to be.
41. Big Love
“It breaks my heart that he wasn’t here to see this day.” — Margene
Bill Henrickson seems like a typical suburban husband and father, except for the fact that he has three wives, nine kids and three homes to maintain. The Salt Lake City polygamist has to juggle his families’ needs while overseeing his casino business, fulfilling his political interests and attempting to reconnect with his fundamentalist relatives.
Best Part: How Bill handles his three wives, nine kids and three homes.
Worst Part: There are some compound scenes.
42. Big Little Lies (HBO)
“I know I have this madness, these fucking demons in here, but I’m fighting them. I’m fighting them!” — Perry
Based on the same-titled best-seller by Liane Moriarty, “Big Little Lies” weaves a darkly comedic tale of murder and mischief in the tranquil beachfront town of Monterey, California. Amidst doting moms, successful husbands, beautiful children, and stunning homes exists a community fueled by rumours and divided into haves and have-nots, exposing fractured relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and friends and neighbours. Told through the eyes of three mothers — Madeline, Celeste and Jane — the series’ narrative explores society’s myths regarding perfection and its romanticisation of marriage, sex, parenting and friendship. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley star as the three prominent “mothers of Monterey.”
Best Part: Stellar cast! Need I say more?
Worst Part: The editing can be quite distracting.
