4. Microwave popcorn
Chemicals like perfluorooctanoic acid are found in the lining of microwave popcorn bags and have been known to lower libido and cause prostate problems over the longer term.
5. Mint
Whether you’re popping a breath mint or having a cup of peppermint tea, mint in all its guises can be bad news for your sex life. Menthol in mint contains an ingredient that lowers testosterone levels.
6. Sugar
Sugar is everywhere, and too much of it can increase your insulin levels, causing you to store belly fat, lose muscle mass and… cause testosterone levels to drop. In men, increased belly fat can raise oestrogen levels, resulting in low libido and erectile dysfunction.
7. Cornflakes
Cornflakes were originally invented by a bloke called John Harvey Kellogg who was an “anti-masturbation crusader”. What a hobby. He thought that sex and masturbation caused a range of physical, mental and spiritual health problems. He believed that making people eat a bland, meatless, sugarless breakfast would suppress their sexual urges. He also gave people yoghurt enemas.
8. Licorice
Glycyrrhizic acid – the main compound in the licorice root that gives it its distinctive flavour – has been found to suppress testosterone production. Researchers found that giving healthy man 7 grams of liquorice a day decreased their testosterone levels by 35 per cent after just four days.
9. Coriander
Those of you who hate coriander, rejoice. You now have a legitimate excuse to avoid it (other than just being a weirdo). Coriander is often used by Eastern monks to keep their sex drive at bay so they can remain celibate.
10. Soy products
The phytoestrogen in soy is said to be one of the main foods that affect hormonal imbalances in men and women and make them poor performers in bed.
