This family’s gesture of wearing helmet for their four-month-old boy’s condition is the sweetest.
Meet the Gutierrez family.
They are a picture of a happy family — all wearing helmets. The reason will definitely melt your heart.
Shayna and Gary were over the moon when their baby boy, Jonas arrived four months ago, but just recently, they were left heartbroken when Jonas was diagnosed with plagiocephaly (also known as flat head syndrome) — a common condition and thankfully, treatable.
Jonas was given a helmet to wear to fix the condition and he must wear it for 3-6 months, but when his big sister, three-year-old Camila, saw him in his helmet, she had a better idea.
Camila told her mum and dad she also wants to wear a helmet to show her support to Jonas, so she went and got her bike helmet and put it on, too. Well, her dad wasn’t one to be left out, so he put on his helmet, and they enjoyed a family breakfast together.
Shayna didn’t let the moment pass and snapped a photo of them, along with Jonas, wearing their helmets, and shared some photos on Facebook, with the caption, “Solidarity in the Gutierrez home.”
Gary told Buzzfeed News he couldn’t be more proud of Camila for being a wonderful sister. “She’s all about inclusion,” he said. “She wants her brother to be happy. She doesn’t want him to feel different.”
He explained that the back of Jonas’s head is severely flat and the helmet will correct the flatness, which was caused by Jonas repeatedly sleeping on his back.
Now, the Gutierrez’s have made a pact that Saturdays the only day the entire family gets to spend together will be helmet days until Jonas’s treatment is over. “I think it will be a normal Saturday routine for our family,” he said.
Shayna also told Scary Mommy that Jonas and Camila have a special bond. “Camila definitely entertains him. She is a mess. She loves bugs and will bring rollie pollies in to climb on him. The helmet will probably save him from a lot of accidents from her. She loves him dearly,” she said.
