Many of us have been there – feeling as though we are being judged by other parents.
According to the findings of a new survey, it’s not uncommon.
The results of a 2015 survey of 2000 parents of children aged under five by parental education nonprofit ZERO TO THREE have been released in a new report called Tuning In: Parents of Young Children Tell Us What They Think, Know and Need and finds that mothers are more likely to feel judged than fathers in all areas…except for one.
The survey found that dads often feel more judged by their partners than mums do.
However, while most parents feel judged almost all the time, 48% of mums said that they feel they are judged more by strangers, while only 24% of dads said the same. Other parents were a source of judgment for 33% of mums compared to 20% of dads, while 35% of mums said they felt judged by their in-laws compared with 20% of dads.
The survey also found that parents admit to disciplining their kids differently when they’re in public, with the report’s authors suggesting that is a result of parents feeling they will be judged by other parents for being too lenient, too harsh, or both.
But dads by and large seemed to think they were doing a good job of parenting, with 84% indicating they think they are good parents, compared to 79% of mums who think the same.
The survey also found that most parents love having children and more than 90% say parenting is their biggest joy, they don’t find it easy. More than 70% of parents said that bringing up kids is their biggest challenge in life.
