Guess The Sex of Your Baby The Old Wives Way

So you’ve just done your 12 week scan and everything is looking good. You’ve told those who need to be told and you may be anxious to find out the sex of your little bundle of joy. You have a to wait for the anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks, so why not try some of these ridiculously hilarious Old Wives Tales to see if you can predict the gender of your little one?

Carrying Style

It’s said that if a woman is carrying high, its a little girl, and if she’s carrying low, it’s a boy. All out in front suggests a boy, whilst “spread out horizontally” indicates a girl. I’d like to know what carrying in the backside means? That’s where I seem to be where I’m stacking my baby weight!

Body Clues

Apparently, little girls steal their mothers beauty, so if you are experiencing bouts of acne and skin blemishes then brace yourself for a pink one! Dry hands and cold feet are said to bring a boy!

The Ring Swing

Lots of fun, tried and tested, is the ring swing. Place your wedding ring on a piece of string or a strand of the mothers hair, and hold it over the mother’s belly. There are many variations to this old myth, such as who should hold the string or hair, who the hair comes from, the mother should be standing up or laying down, but the essence of the task is that if the ring swings in a circle it’s a boy, back and forth is a girl.

Chemistry Lesson

I’ve not heard of this one before, but Old Wives say that if the pregnant mother pees into a cup and adds a small amount of Draino, or drain cleaner, that the resulting colour indicates the sex of the baby! Green for a girl and blue for a…..you guessed it…..boy! This experiment is not highly recommended due to the potent vapours of drain cleaner, but you can get a similar reaction with baking soda. If your pee/soda mix fizzles, it’s a bouncing boy, if nothing happens, its a sweet little girl!

Heart Rate

I even dug out my old ultrasound records to see if this one was true! Old Wives say that if the heartbeat is under 140bpm, then it’s a boy, over 140bpm is a girl.

Taste Test

Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what little girls are made of! And apparently sweets are what you crave if you are having a girl. Salty and sour cravings mean a boy is on it’s way!

Ancient Calendars

So the Mayans have not proven to be the most accurate in depicting the fate of the world, but both this culture, and the Chinese, believe your babies gender lies in the year and month they were conceived and the age of the mother at conception. Mayans believed if the mother’s age and the year conceived are both even or uneven numbers, (ie, I am 31 and I conceived in 2013 both uneven numbers) then the baby is a girl. Chubby Hubby

Apparently if your partner starts to share in the weight gain game then you have a little girl on the way!

Morning Sickness

Intense morning sickness is said to indicate a girl, smooth sailing without your head in the toilet half the day means you’ll pay for it later with a mischievous little boy!

Key Grab

This only really works for oblivious pregnant women. Place a key inconspicuously in front of your friend and ask her to pick it up. If she grabs it by the narrow end, she’s having a girl, by the rounder end means a boy! Or she could just tell you to pick it up yourself!
