4. Hypnobirthing
Usually a 4-5 week course, Hypno-birthing teaches self-hypnosis techniques to assist in the area of relaxation during the labour process. Hypno-birthing is becoming increasingly popular with expectant mums as it helps to prepare psychologically for the birth of baby as well as the associated pain. It gives mums the tools to relax and naturally relieve pain without medical assistance if they are that way inclined.
5. Antenatal Yoga
Yoga is known for its breathing and relaxation techniques and builds muscle strength through stretching and poses. Man Yoga schools offer special classes for pregnant women and promotes gentle stretching and movements to help prepare for the physical side of labour. Increasing flexibility is also a focus along with breathing. Strong pelvic floor muscles are a necessity before and after birth so yoga and even Pilates are great classes to assist in keeping them strong.
6. Aqua-natal
Water makes a heavy, pregnant mum feel weightless and water also offers support and can relieve swelling of the legs during pregnancy. Being gentle of joints, Aqua-natal classes are great for building muscle strength and increasing stamina to assist with a potentially long labour. With slow, gentle movements, Aqua-natal is great for back strain and can improve posture affected by excess weight and tiredness.
With so many choices, it is important that you choose a class that suits both you and your partner as well as your ideal birth plan. Do remember though, that all labours and births are different and what you learn in an antenatal class may not apply during your labour. Keep an open mind and learn everything that interests you, you never know what you will find yourself doing when it comes to ‘go’ time!
