As a mother of young children, one of the scariest moments you will experience is when your child is sick.

Particularly when they can’t tell you what is wrong or whether something hurts.

When my oldest son was just six weeks old, he developed a high temperature. We called the nurses on call service and were advised to keep monitoring his temperature and if it went past 38 degrees, we were to take him straight to emergency.

We diligently kept putting the stick thermometer under his arm, constantly interrupting his sleep and causing him distress and discomfort. Eventually we took him to the hospital for further treatment.

The good news is that he is now a thriving six year old!

The lesson we learned as new parents was that monitoring our children through an illness is so crucial. It ensures that any deterioration in their health is quickly picked up. It also means that we are in control and can give our children the care they need immediately.

Keeping a close eye on your child’s temperature in a way that doesn’t interrupt their sleep – as we did when our little one was six weeks old – was the reason behind the FeverSmart Temperature Monitor by Nurofen for Children. How Parents Can Be Fever Smart For Their Kids | Stay At Home Mum

This innovative digital thermometer accurately* measures body temperature through an adhesive patch that it is placed under your child’s armpit. Because the patch remains in place, you can easily monitor your child’s fever without disturbing their sleep or rest.

The temperature monitor is then connected to the free FeverSmart App (available in the Apple App Store and Google Play). The product is ultra-sensitive and uses the same material used for babies in hospitals.

We reviewed the Nurofen for Children FeverSmart Temperature Monitor and saw the app takes the child’s temperature at regular intervals, which provides parents and medical professionals with a snapshot of the child’s fever over any period of time.

The app will tell you whether your child’s temperature is high, moderate or normal. It can also be configured to send push notifications when the temperature is in the high range.

A fever (or a high temperature) is when the temperature of the body rises to above 38°C. Up to this point, it is considered normal. However, it is important to note that in many cases, if the child is over three months old, a high fever does not necessarily point to a serious illness.

Fever is often caused by a virus or bacteria. Viral infections are far more common and, unlike bacterial infections, cannot be treated with antibiotics. How Parents Can Be Fever Smart For Their Kids | Stay At Home Mum

Our recommendation is to look after your child at home by allowing them to rest, dressing them in comfortable clothing, regularly giving them clear fluids to drink and watching for any signs that their illness is getting worse. The FeverSmart Temperature Monitor makes this latter task easier thanks to the regular updates, through you should regularly check on your child if they’re unwell.

If you child is distressed, giving them Nurofen for Children can also help to provide temporary pain relief and reduce fever. It’s important to note when and how much ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Nurofen, is given.  Luckily the FeverSmart App allows you to log details about any medication given.

Remember, monitoring your child’s fever is only the first step in treating any illness. If your child is under three months and has a temperature higher than 38°C, is between three and six months and has a temperature higher than 39°C or the fever lasts more than a day, you really should seek professional medical advice.
