Did you ever wonder why kids call us mum and dad?

According to the experts, It’s because we all have rules that most of us follow. These are rules related to our cultures, our societies, and even our families. We have rules for how to greet people (shake hands, hug), how to use forks or chopsticks, what to call our teacher (“Mrs. Bell”) and even where to sit at the dinner table.

We don’t think of these things as “rules”; they’re just there.

One of these kinds of rules in most families around the world is that parents are the heads of the household and children are supposed to listen to them. By calling parents “Mum” or “Dad,” it helps everyone stick to their roles. Some parents feel that if you call them by their first name, you don’t think they are the boss anymore. For many families in certain cultures, referencing one’s parent by their first name is disrespectful.

It is also a great way to teach respect by encouraging children to refer to people by their family title. Especially for Grandma, and Grandpa, and Aunts and Uncles. We all deserve to be given that little bit of respect.

How does your chosen parental moniker make you feel about yourself and your role as a parent?

Nicknames have always been popular among parents and their children. They are a way to show affection and create a sense of closeness. They can also be used to express frustration or disappointment and to show admiration and respect.

Whatever the reason for choosing a nickname, they often say something about the relationship between parent and child. For example, nicknames like “honey” or “dear” can imply deep love and affection. On the other hand, nicknames like “brat” or “monster” can convey a more negative feeling. Nicknames can also change over time, as the relationship between parent and child evolves.

Ultimately, nicknames are just one way that parents can express themselves to their children. They can be positive or negative but always say something about the parent-child bond.

What does your child call you?

As a parent, you might be surprised to discover that your child has given you a nickname. While nicknames can be endearing, they can also be slightly embarrassing – after all, you are the adult and your child is supposed to respect you! However, nicknames can also be indicative of the relationship between parent and child.

If your child calls you by a nickname, it might mean that they feel comfortable and close to you. Alternatively, it could simply be a sign of immaturity. Either way, nicknames can be an interesting way to gauge your child’s feelings towards you!
