A freebirth mum has gone viral on Instagram after delivering her baby in the Pacific Ocean. In a video posted to the social media site, Josy Peukert, 37, can be seen giving birth to her child on the shoreline of Playa Majagual in Costa Rica.
“I got this idea in my head I wanted to give birth in the ocean and because the conditions were right on the day that’s what I did,” she told Jam Press.
As her labour began, Josy and her husband Benni drove to the beach. They had packed a birthing kit which included towels, a bowl with a sieve to catch the placenta, gauze, and paper towels.
Freebirth was something they had both always wanted and they felt that being in nature would make the experience even more special.

Beach birth
The mum-of-four said that the idea of freebirth – giving birth without any medical intervention – is a liberating one. They believe that it allows them to tap into the full power of their bodies, and that doctors and midwives only get in the way.
“I wanted to be worry-free for once. My first birth was traumatic in a clinic and my second birth was a home birth but by the third even a midwife in my home was too much,” she said in an interview. “This time I had no doctors’ appointments or scans or outside influence.”
The birth went smoothly and soon their beautiful baby boy, “Bodhi,” was born. The name was derived from a Buddhist’s practice of the Eight Fold Path which achieved a state of enlightenment.
“For weeks, I monitored the tide and so when the time was right for me to give birth I knew the beach would be safe for us,” she said. “Bodhi is a really calm and satisfied baby. Everything is wonderful for him if he is in mama’s arms. He is just as relaxed as he was in my tummy.”
Freebirths are not for everyone, but for Josy and Benni it was the most amazing and empowering experience of their lives. Thanks to their preparation and knowledge, they were able to bring their son into the world exactly as they had hoped.
Netizens questioned the idea of freebirth
The video has been widely shared on social media, with many people praising the mum for her courageous act. However, some critics have questioned whether freebirth is safe, particularly given the risks associated with delivering a baby in an uncontrolled environment.
“Is this sanitary? There’s a lot of bacteria in the sea,” one IG account user asked.
Others have praised Jody and her husband by saying, “So powerful and so beautiful! This brings the experience of birth full circle back to what it originally was!”
Freebirth can be a controversial topic, with many people arguing that it’s dangerous to go without professional help. However, for some women, it’s an empowering choice that allows them to fully embrace their femininity. Ultimately, it is up to each individual woman to decide whether freebirth is right for her and her family.
The idea of freebirth
The phenomenon of freebirth is one that has been gaining popularity in recent years, as more and more women choose to forgo medical intervention during childbirth.
For many freebirthers, the decision is a deeply personal one, informed by a desire to return to the natural process of childbirth. However, there are also a number of practical benefits to freebirth, including the avoidance of expensive hospital bills and unnecessary medical interventions.
In some cases, freebirth can even be safer than traditional childbirth, as it eliminates the risk of infection or other complications that can occur in hospitals.
