Mum Shares Heartbreaking Moment Her Twin Boys Were Stillborn

A mother has shared the heartbreaking moment that her identical twin boys were stillborn.

Jacqueline Hoy, 29, from Port Macquarie, is already a mum of two —  Lachlan, 8 and Edward, 2 — but was overjoyed to welcome an additional member to the family, and was surprised that there were actually two of them, especially that twins don’t run in their family.

However, at six weeks, she learned that the twin boys shared one placenta. “It was explained to me as “they share a house but they have different bedrooms”. Each had their own amniotic sac,” Mrs Hoy said.

Normally, one placenta should house only one foetus, which means that in the Hoy family’s case, where identical twins shared a placenta, complications can arise. They are sometimes referred to as monochorionic twins.

So Mrs Hoy religiously went for scans and check ups every fortnight, knowing that any pregnancy involving twins is considered high risk. At the 14-week mark, Mrs Hoy and her husband decided to name their twins, Henry and William, who seemed to be doing just fine until one day in February this year.

On February 13th, as Mrs Hoy dropped Lachlan to school, she noticed something different about her belly.

“I thought the boys were really quiet. It’s just not common – you can always feel babies moving around.

“Normally when they’re quiet I have a drink of icy cold water and lay down and that wakes them up. But it didn’t work. I also started feeling quite sick, like I was going to be sick, so my mum drove me straight to the hospital,” she said.

At the hospital, Mrs Hoy received the devastating news when an ultrasound scan revealed that one of the twins, Henry, died in the womb at 37 weeks.

“The overwhelming pain that took over my body was uncontrollable. I felt like I was trapped in a nightmare and I needed to wake up. But I couldn’t escape,” she told Whimn.

The other twin, William, still had a tiny heartbeat so doctors raced Mrs Hoy in for surgery, but sadly, he didn’t make it either.

“I remember that somebody once said to me, “you won’t know love until you have a child”. I don’t disagree with that statement. But I can assure you, you won’t know heartbreak until you lose a child,” she continued.

Now, the family are ambassadors for the Stillbirth Foundation and will be running in this year’s City2Surf race. They have already raised a tremendous AUD $13,000.
