A mum has revealed that she went into labour while she was hungover, because she did not know she was pregnant and was out binge drinking just hours before she gave birth.
Abigail Avery, 24, from the West Midlands in the UK, said she went on a night out with pals in January this year.
The next morning, she and a friend were having some pizza when she began experiencing terrible stomach pains. She said that she initially thought she had a urine infection and rested until her boyfriend, Jamie Pillinger, 37, arrived home.
However, she said that the pain became more intense as the day went by, and at 10.30pm on January 9, Jamie drove Abigail to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton.
When Abigail got out of the car, she said she was in so much agony she could barely walk, but, despite this, she didn’t think for a second it could be labour.
It was only after a nurse at the hospital broke the shocking news to her that she was in labour. Doctors initially suspected Abigail was 24 weeks pregnant but it subsequently emerged she was further along. “I was so shocked. The thought never even crossed my mind,” Abigail said.
Abigail said that throughout the previous eight months, she had been on the contraceptive pill, had periods, although she said she had experienced some pregnancy symptoms.
She complained of shooting pains in her stomach and constantly needing to get up in the night for a wee, but her doctor said it was a bladder infection. She said she also gained weight, but put it down to the rich food she’d eaten and Baileys she’d drunk over Christmas.
At the hospital, Abigail said that nurses found her case interesting.
“There were around 15 doctors and nurses there, probably because I was hungover in labour, and they were worried about me,” she said.
Early the next morning, doctors broke Abigail’s waters, and was set to go for an emergency caesarean but suddenly, after just three pushes, her baby girl, Isabella arrived, weighing just 4lb 8oz shortly before 6am on January 10.
Now, despite her unexpected arrival, Isabella is happy and healthy at four months.
Abigail, who does not advocate knowingly drinking during pregnancy, said that if she only knew she was pregnant, she wouldn’t have thought about drinking even just a drop.
“I definitely wouldn’t have drunk if I’d known I was pregnant. I felt really guilty.
“Of course, I didn’t mean to. If I’d known I was pregnant, I wouldn’t have touched a drop. I can’t believe what I thought was a hangover was Isabella,” she said.
