Treatment
Currently, there is no established cure for bipolar disorder. It is a long-term, chronic mental illness which needs to be managed carefully under the instructions of physicians. You can opt for the following treatments:
- Take medications – antipsychotic or antidepressant medications and the use of mood stabilizers.
- Psychotherapy can also be a good way of managing the illness. Examples are the family-focused therapy and the cognitive/behavioural therapy
- Electroconvulsive therapy can also be employed.
- Education of the child and giving them self-management strategy tools to help during circumstance in which they are alone.
Additionally, treatment is more effective if the doctor or a health provider detects the disorder early and if your child adheres to the provided medication plans. If your home is a stress-free place and the family members are supportive enough, that will make a huge difference to their management of the disorder.
Caution
One main thing to remember is that the child should not stop any prescribed medication unless they have an okay from the treating doctor. This is because it may lead to a rebound of the symptoms which may be very dangerous, and stopping some of these medications suddenly can lead to severe health issues.
