A Blanket fort/cubby is so easy to set up and will give the kids endless hours of fun. Give them ideas for imaginative play. It could be a camping adventure, a spaceship, a cave or any number things.

4. Make a Photo Album

A photo album is something all children should have made for them. It’s a good idea to not only keep one of their childhood but to also make them a small one of their own with a few special photos that they can call their own.

A garden is a great thing to make with the kids. Especially over school holidays. Decide on what flowers or veggies you’d like to grow and get to it. The kids can have a real hands-on part in it and you might even find that if they are a part of the process of planting, caring for and growing their very own vegetables, they’re much more likely to want to eat the fruits of their labour!

6. Make a Papier Maché

Making papier Maché is another great thing to make with your kids. They can personalise it to be whatever they want, it has a minimal cost, is hands on and gives hours of enjoyment that they can have a keepsake from for years to come.

7. Make a dress up box.

Go through your old clothes and ask family members for anything they think would be good to add to the ‘box’. Why not make a quick trip to a local second-hand shop for some real ‘pearlers’ when it comes to old style, retro clothing and costumes. Hats, shoes, bags, feather boas, suspenders, aprons, coats, masks, walking sticks”¦you name it. They all make fantastic additions and the kids can even put on a fashion parade for you with each costume choice. Have the camera ready because this can give you some great fun shots for those embarrassing 21^st pics in the future.

Sure you may be one of those families that regularly go camping but you don’t have to pack the kids up and spend half the time in the car (or worrying about all those creepy crawlies in the bush/at the beach) just to experience it. Pitch a tent in the back yard with some sleeping bags in it then let your imagination run with it. Make a small contained campfire (safety first) – a fire pit or chiminea are great for this, get some marshmallows, have the kids collect some sticks to use for toasting. Whip up a damper (don’t forget the golden syrup) and settle in for a night under the stars. It’s something they will remember fondly when they are older and may even become a regular occurrence.

So many kids are taught that getting dirty is an inconvenience and they need to keep clean. Come on”¦let them play! It’s important for all kids to let loose and get grubby every now and then. Find (or make) a dirt area somewhere in the yard and just add water. Sure there’ll be some mud on their clothes and in their hair etc, but it’ll be so much fun for the kids and enables some fantastic free play. Mud pies and mud fights are heaps of fun and as Peppa pig says, everyone loves jumping in muddy puddles!

10. Bake/Cook

If it’s more of an inside kind of day, let the kids cook up a storm with their own shaped and chosen flavour cookies, individual mini pizzas with English muffin bases, Jelly ice cubes that are great for a building block dessert, fruit salad skewers and cupcakes they can decorate with their favourite colours, sprinkles or lollies. Be prepared for a little mess and lots of taste testing but it’s great fun for everyone!
