In 2013, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (aka Kate and Wills) received a Baby Box as a gift of congratulations on the impending birth of Prince George from the Finnish government.

The ensuing media coverage subsequently had the Finnish Social Security Service, Kela, inundated with calls from around the globe from people wanting to purchase one.

Three Finnish Dads, each from a family who were recipients of Baby Boxes themselves and were so impressed by it, have set up an online company Finnish Baby Box.

It’s the world’s smallest baby gear company (probably not for much longer) and they hand pack each box from a warehouse on Lauttasaari, a small island near Helsinki the capital, already having shipped to parents in over 30 countries. But I’d Still Like To Move To Finland

The tradition of receiving a Baby Box is an established part of the Finnish rite of passage into motherhood, bonding generations of women and contributes to Finland’s ranking as one of the best countries in the world for mother’s to live in.

I realise we have free and supportive (for the most part) health and education systems here in Australia, it’s just the notion that a government would think and such care on a basic level as to supply the necessities to an expectant mother, giving her a pretty good idea of what she will be needing first up to then build upon at her leisure, that makes me want to go and live there. I told my husband so, explaining that because of the baby box being one of the main reasons for an intercontinental move, that we’d also be having another few babies. He had a very quick think and decided that because Finland is home to some mad-keen motorsport enthusiasts, that yes, we can move there and have more babies.

I’m off to apply for our passports.

I think our government should be supplying Baby Boxes instead of only cash payments.. That’s my two cents.
