10 Great Places in Queensland to Take Dad For Fathers Day

Fathers Day has rolled around again, that time of the year when we take some time to appreciate the impact that dads have on the lives of their kids, and their partners.

It’s always fun to celebrate, but what is there to do?

Well, for folks in Queensland there’s a load of activities available for families celebrating their head honcho (in his eyes anyway). We’ve put together just 10 of our favourite spots, which we think dads are going to love.

Bundaberg Rum Distillery

The Bundaberg Rum Distillery just spent an incredible $8 million dollars upgrading it’s visitors centre – and it is totally amazing!  Take Dad on a guided tour through the factory, see the history of Bundaberg Rum – and even mix your own rum with Dad’s name embossed on the bottle!

Even if you aren’t a drinker (I don’t drink rum) – everyone in the family will enjoy it!  Plus it has the most amazing shop where you can buy Bundy products not available anywhere else in the world!

Big Kart Track

Located in Landsborough on the Sunshine Coast, get Dad hooning around the track (with the whole family). If he has a ‘need for speed’ this is the place to let it out, and for both boys and girls it’s a seriously fun day. Big Kart Track is Australia’s biggest commercial track, and they even have custom-made karts.

For families with kids over 12, they can access the main Big Kart Track, but even for little kids there’s a kids track available, and with two-seater (adult-child) karts as well!

Go Whale Watching at Hervey Bay

It is still whale watching season, and I truly believe Hervey Bay is the best place to go to see the amazing Humpback Whales. If you’ve never seen them before, you’ll be amazed at just how enormous and majestic these animals are. Seeing them really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and something that is so special to share with your family, and for your children to share with their dad.

Australia Zoo

Located in Landsborough on the Sunshine Coast, this amazing zoo will keep you and the family happy all day.  There is so much to see, and the zoo is kept in totally immaculate condition.  Check out the shows in the ‘Crocoseum’ held a few times per day.  If the kids are too little to walk around, they have little carts that you can plop the kids into so they aren’t on their feet all day. It’s a really well-thought out and entertaining spot, guaranteed to keep you busy all day.

The Workshops Rail Museum, Ipswich

If Dad is into anything on rails, then this is the best place to take him. The Workshops is a train-lovers paradise, showing the history of the railway in Australia. This makes it the perfect place to geek out on wonders of rail machinery and learn some new things. Ipswich is a gorgeous town located about an hours drive from Brisbane.  Get to drive a train yourself, sit in the tilt train and play the inter-active games in the main shed.  Enough to keep the family busy all day!

Catch and Release a Barramundi at Bli Bli Waterpark

If dads love to fish, but your freezer is already chock-a-block, you should check out the Catch and Release activities at Bli Bli Waterpark on the Sunshine Coast. This place has tonnes of Barramundi, and a super fun catch and release lake, which is the only one in Queensland. It’s a great place for dads to introduce their kids into the game of fishing, and in the summer you can even waterski at the park, making it an extra thrill!

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum, Gold Coast

For those dads who are more fond of the inside than the outside, there’s a whole day of activities to be had at the Ripley’s Believe it Or Not Museum on the Gold Coast. This one is great for kids and adults who have a love of the weird and wonderful, or who just love to see new things. The fun and interactive museum is bursting with oddities, and will be enough to keep conversations flowing at the dinner table for weeks to come.

Billabong Sanctuary, Townsville

Unlike many zoos, the Billabong Sanctuary in Townsville is all about showcasing the very best that Australia’s wildlife has to offer. Our wildlife can be pretty shy, and even if you’ve lived in Australia your entire life you might have missed some of our most unique animals. At the Billabong Sanctuary you have a chance to see them all, and Dad and the kids will find lots to do in this gorgeous natural setting.

See the Cobb & Co Museum in Toowoomba

If you want to take the Dad in your life back to a simpler time, you can’t get much simpler than the Cobb & Co Museum in Toowoomba. Ideal for history buffs and those who think they might have been born in the wrong era, the Museum houses the National Carriage Collection, and is full of interesting information and artefacts about vehicles from the horse-drawn time. There are also some super interesting workshops available, that teach people traditional skills from the ‘old days’. Perfect for the ‘old man’ of your family.

Climb the Storey Bridge in Brisbane

This activity is definitely not for the faint of heart, particularly if your fear is centred around heights in any way. Brisbane’s Storey Bridge may not be the Sydney Harbour Bridge in terms of reputation, but you can still take Dad on an adventure to clamber your way to the top. The bridge is a whopping 80 metres from the river, and it’s guaranteed to show off a great view, as well as an experience that Dad (and the kids) won’t soon forget!
