Some dog foods can be quite expensive. Why not try and make your own home made dog food recipes at home? It’s easy – and at least you know what your dog is eating!
Chicken & Vegetable Rice Mix
- 1.5kg minced chicken meat
- 2 1/2 cups frozen vegetable blend (no garlic or onions) minced
- 4 cups rice
- 6.5 cups water
Place chicken, vegetables, and rice into a large saucepan or Dutch oven. Stir in water until the mixture is smooth. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender and all of the liquid has been absorbed, about 25 minutes. Cool completely before serving; store covered in the refrigerator or freeze into individual serves.
Makes 12 serves for an average size dog.
Meat and Pasta Frugal Mix
- 2kg pet mince
- 10 litres water
- 2 tablepoons Vegemite
- 1kg pack mixed frozen vegetables
- 12 Weetbix biscuits
- 4 beef stockcubes
- 500 grams dried pasta or rice – cooked
Boil up all the ingredients except for the rice and pasta and simmer for twenty minutes. Stir in the cooked rice and pasta. Makes 16 serves.
Bacon Flavoured Biscuit Balls
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 10 tablespoons bacon fat, melted
- 5 cups wholemeal flour
Preheat oven to 175 degrees. Lightly grease a cookie sheet. Beat eggs in a large bowl. Stir in milk, water, salt, and bacon fat until well blended. Gradually stir in flour to make a stiff dough. Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll into 3cm balls. Place on prepared baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes. Cool on racks. Store in a covered container in the refrigerator.
