How To Be A Savvy Shopper

Ever bought a dress at full price only to find it on sale a few days later? It’s seriously the worst, that’s why being a savvy shopper pays off…but it’s more than just buying items on sale.

Although having the uncanny talent of finding a bargain is a definite trait of a Savvy Shopper, in essence it is about making the most out of your hard-earned dollars. Part of being a savvy shopper is knowing when and where to buy.

Here are seven tips on how to be a savvy shopper!

1. Compare, compare, compare.

Who has time these days to bounce from store to store in order to competitive price-shop? Use online searching sites to find the lowest price for the item you want, and use that research to your advantage when talking to the retailer face to face, nine times out of 10 the retailer will match the online price.

2. Shop out of season.

Seasoned shoppers never hit the mall when new clothes hit the racks. Shop for spring and summer items in Autumn, and buy your Autumn and winter looks when spring rolls around. If you pay attention to the fashion week previews, you can even shop the trends on a bargain, provided you choose looks that will be around for more than one season.

3. Be friendly and remain polite.

A nice attitude and a smile can go a long way. Think of it as a game. You’re more likely to have fun and to reach a good deal if you engage in a little give-and-take.

4. Haggle it.

In today’s economy, a certain amount of haggling is expected, so don’t be reluctant to ask for a better price. For better results, try asking if there is any flexibility in the price, instead of demanding a discount. Getting a better price can often be as simple as asking if the product is going on sale anytime soon, and if so, can they match that price.

5. Make a List.

Write down everyone you plan to buy a gift for, no matter how small the gift may be. Include ideas of what to give each person, along with the maximum amount you’re willing to spend. This will help you manage your holiday budget when the time comes.

6. Beware Pressure Sales Tactics.

Don’t fall for high-pressure sales tactics. When a sales representative tells you that the deal is only available if you buy it right now, you probably should probably walk away or ask to speak to a manger to hold the price. If they believe in their product they should want you to feel good about your purchase and not buy it out of fear of losing a special price.

7. Know Store Policies.

You should make sure you understand the policies of stores where you shop to avoid over-spending. Some stores only allow returns for store credit or exchange. Other stores have generous price matching policies if you find an identical product for less within a certain amount of time. Knowing these types of policies can prevent you from spending more than you need.
