Homemade Pet Shampoo

What do you use to clean your pet? People shampoo? Baby shampoo? Or one of the millions to choose from at Pet Barn? The range in there is enough to make you want to run screaming out of the shop.

Been there, done that, and scared some children in the carpark on the way out.

It’s not often you can boast that your pet is squeaky clean, fluffy and smelling fresh. We’ve found two great recipes for making fabulous pet shampoo to change that. Read on and start boasting in no time!

Antibacterial soap and Vinegar

For this wash, you only need three things and about three minutes.

  • A container such as a shampoo bottle or other squeeze bottle
  • Clear liquid antibacterial soap
  • White vinegar

Mix equal parts vinegar and soap in your container. Shake well. Now you’re ready to wash poochy or any other small fluffy animal.

Use the shampoo the same way you would any pet shampoo. Be careful not to get it into your pet’s eyes or ears. Start with a small amount because it lathers well and work the suds deep into the coat. Rinse well and dry. There is no wet dog smell and should be no residue on your pet’s coat, due to the vinegar. The antibacterial aspect helps with parasites, dirt, and even minor skin abrasions and itchy or flaky skin.

Homemade Oatmeal Pet Shampoo

Oatmeal shampoo is great for pets with skin conditions or allergies. Although there are more ingredients in this one, it does make up 2 litres which should last a few washes!

  • 1 Cup of Oatmeal
  • 1 Cup of Baking Soda
  • 4 Cups of Warm Water
  • 1 Teaspoon of Dishwashing Liquid
  • 10 Drops of scented fragrance (Optional)
  • 2L milk container, empty and washed

Firstly grind up the oatmeal in your blender or other whizzing device. For oatmeal baths to work, the oatmeal has to have the consistency of flour. Pour all the ingredients into the milk container and screw the lid on and shake. The oatmeal shampoo is then ready to use to clean your pet and leave them with a soft, nice smelling coat. Shake thoroughly before each use for best results.

The baking soda in the shampoo will dissolve any foul odours, and the oatmeal will sooth and cleanse the skin.

Tip: Always brush your pet very well before giving him a bath. This oatmeal shampoo won’t penetrate underlying matting, and may not be as effective.

Both so easy to make! And from ingredients you’ll likely find around the house.

Get going, now. I think your dog is running the bath.
